Summary

Bestselling novelist Margaret George brings to life the glittering kingdom of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, in this lush, sweeping, and richly detailed saga, the basis for the Cleopatra TV mini-series。

Told in Cleopatra's own voice, The Memoirs of Cleopatra is a mesmerizing tale of ambition, passion, and betrayal in the ancient Egyptian world, which begins when the twenty-year-old queen seeks out the most powerful man in the world, Julius Caesar, and does not end until, having survived the assassination of Caesar and the defeat of the second man she loves, Marc Antony, she plots her own death rather than be paraded in triumph through the streets of Rome。

Most of all, in its richness and authenticity, it is an irresistible story that reveals why Margaret George's work has been widely acclaimed as "the best kind of historical novel, one the reader can't wait to get lost in。" (San Francisco Chronicle)。

I tried reading this book at least 4 times, but I could never get into it。 There is amazing attention to detail, but all the constant descriptions and explanations made it feel more like a textbook than a story。 If I wanted to read a textbook, I would read an actual non-fiction book about Cleopatra's life。 I tried reading this book at least 4 times, but I could never get into it。 There is amazing attention to detail, but all the constant descriptions and explanations made it feel more like a textbook than a story。 If I wanted to read a textbook, I would read an actual non-fiction book about Cleopatra's life。 。。。more

My fourth Margaret George book and probably my second favorite behind only her brilliant book on Henry the VIII。I don't really consider it a spoiler to discuss a few things most people know about Cleopatra that happened over 2000 years ago。 In my opinion one of the most interesting women in history。 The Queen of the Nile, daughter to the leader of Egypt Ptolemy, lover to Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and of course her famous death, wow what a life。 I'm convinced that Cleopatra had to be not just be My fourth Margaret George book and probably my second favorite behind only her brilliant book on Henry the VIII。I don't really consider it a spoiler to discuss a few things most people know about Cleopatra that happened over 2000 years ago。 In my opinion one of the most interesting women in history。 The Queen of the Nile, daughter to the leader of Egypt Ptolemy, lover to Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and of course her famous death, wow what a life。 I'm convinced that Cleopatra had to be not just beautiful but extremely intelligent and one of the most beguiling women who ever lived。 I'm sure Caesar and Antony had no shortage of options and yet both fell hard for her。George does a great job covering her fascinating life and really makes the reader feel like we are in the room in Rome and Alexandria with these historical greats。Despite knowing most of the big things in Cleopatras life, George had many surprises that were introduced to me including two things so shocking that I looked them up immediately to see if they were true and in fact they were。 I won't name them so as not to ruin the fun for future readers。I only had two small knocks on the book。 The first is that she portrays Marc Antony as very weak at times which I find very hard to believe but maybe she is correct who knows。My second knock is something I feel I say about every Margaret George book despite loving them and that is that they are bloated by 20%。 This could have been a fantastic 750-800 page book instead it was about 1000 pages。 Having said this, I look forward to reading all of Margaret Georges books in the next couple years。 。。。more

Margaret George's The Memoirs of Cleopatra tackle the difficult task of telling the story of Cleopatra's life。 The last Ptolemy to rule Egypt。 The great Queen of Egypt。 Cleopatra was not only a clever Queen but also a mother and woman who loved two powerful Roman commanders。 She faced many challenges before and during her rule。 Writing this novel had to have been daunting, but George pulled it off beautifully。 The Memoirs of Cleopatra is written as if Cleopatra is writing her life story on scrol Margaret George's The Memoirs of Cleopatra tackle the difficult task of telling the story of Cleopatra's life。 The last Ptolemy to rule Egypt。 The great Queen of Egypt。 Cleopatra was not only a clever Queen but also a mother and woman who loved two powerful Roman commanders。 She faced many challenges before and during her rule。 Writing this novel had to have been daunting, but George pulled it off beautifully。 The Memoirs of Cleopatra is written as if Cleopatra is writing her life story on scrolls for someone to read once she is gone from the world。 She wanted her truth written to combat others' versions of Cleopatra。 I enjoyed George's choice to write out Cleopatra's life this way。 It gave a more personal feel to the novel。 I especially loved how the story is so highly detailed。 This is a 900+ novel filled with every possible observation, small or large, that made up Cleopatra's daily ongoings and significant life events。 I deeply admire the Cleopatra presented in The Memoirs of Cleopatra。 You can see how clever and curious she is from a young age。 Her ability to soak up knowledge like a sponge is one of my favorite qualities of Cleopatra。 Once she came into power, Cleopatra's pure perseverance and durability were what made her the ruler she was。 Every choice she made in the novel was to keep Egypt safe and prospering。 Her love for her country。 George made it clear that although Cleopatra was a fighter in spirit, she was also a true lover。 I loved reading about Cleopatra as a mother。 It was apparent that she was a devoted mother and only wanted the best for her babies。 I also appreciated the genuine friendship between her attendants, Iras, Charmian, Mardian, and Olympos。 Now with her strengths also came weaknesses that I did not like。 Her ambition that emerged during her time with Caesar and kept growing afterward was my least favorite aspect of her personality。 I wanted her to live a happy and peaceful life in Egypt with her children。 But a ruler's mindset can be taken over by the temptation of growing an empire for her family。 It would not be the story of Cleopatra without two men: Julius Caesar and Marc Antony。 The two loves of her life。 The two men were so different from one another。 One is perceived to be a god among men。 Another is a mortal forced into a role he did not want。 Caesar came into Cleopatra's life when she fought for her right to be Queen of Egypt。 The instant connection between them was staggering to behold in written form。 George somehow brought these two larger-than-life beings together in a mystical yet organic way。 Cleopatra and Caesar's tale of love was anything but ordinary。 This was clear when George represented them as reincarnations of the goddess Isis and the god Amun during the two lovers' first meeting and night together。 George showed how difficult it was for Cleopatra to love a man who was not seen as a mere mortal。 It was angering at times to see Caesar's life in Rome (his wife, the Senate, Roman customs) affect Cleopatra so much。 I didn't particularly like Caesar as a love interest。 He couldn't give her the love and affection Cleopatra truly deserved。 She couldn't control who she fell in love with, and for that, she was constantly attacked for it by the Romans。 And her torture by the Roman people did not end with Caesar's death。 No。 Cleopatra's heart would lead her to one other Roman man。 During the love affair with Caesar, Marc Antony did not play a huge role in The Memoirs of Cleopatra。 He was here and there, but mostly just a side character, as Cleopatra ironically did not think much of him。 When they met again years after Caesar's murder, the sparks and chemistry flew off the pages。 Cleopatra and Antony's love was full of passion。 Everything they did was extreme and passionate, from the love declarations to their fights。In contrast, Caesar couldn't give his whole self to Cleopatra。 Antony was a willing servant to his love for her。 He was not a perfect man, and he made mistakes, but it couldn't be argued that Antony did not love with everything he had。 Antony appreciated Cleopatra for the woman and leader she was。 I loved that characteristic of him。 However, Antony could be pretty toxic at moments in the novel。 He was such a complex character。 I sometimes wanted to hate him, but I couldn't ignore his unadulterated devotion to Cleopatra。 Let's not forget the worst character in the novel, Octavion。 I hated him with my whole heart! I wanted to jump into the pages and beat that cowardly snake。 He was the absolute worst。 I have nothing nice to say about Octavion。 I loved how Cleopatra won her final battle against him by tricking him and ending her life on her terms。 I undoubtedly enjoyed reading The Memoirs of Cleopatra。 Every page was an adventure, and I experienced every possible emotion while reading。 I would recommend this novel to historical fiction readers interested in the mystery of Queen Cleopatra。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Outstanding book。 George is a masterful ghost-writer, and rationalizes Cleopatra's life in an entertaining, believable fashion。 Only complaint is she relegates too many paragraphs to things that deserve little and too little paragraphs that deserve many — for instance, you could probably cut about 100 pages of romance (without cutting out any of the substance of Cleopatra's relationships) and have a better book。 Similarly, she could *add* back a good 20 pages by expanding on things like her youn Outstanding book。 George is a masterful ghost-writer, and rationalizes Cleopatra's life in an entertaining, believable fashion。 Only complaint is she relegates too many paragraphs to things that deserve little and too little paragraphs that deserve many — for instance, you could probably cut about 100 pages of romance (without cutting out any of the substance of Cleopatra's relationships) and have a better book。 Similarly, she could *add* back a good 20 pages by expanding on things like her youngest brother Ptolemy's death, which has only a single paragraph。 That complaint aside, it was a joy to read。 。。。more

A colorful, all-encompassing interpretation of one of the most intriguing women in history。 Through phenomenal research, we journey with Cleopatra through her triumphs, tragedies, loves, and betrayals。 We see her not only as a queen, a goddess incarnate, but as a mortal woman, with faults and feelings, fantasies and failures。 Romantic and reflective, we can ponder the accomplishments and ambitions of Cleopatra in a new light; this novel helps show us a side of her that is more than pure legend。 A colorful, all-encompassing interpretation of one of the most intriguing women in history。 Through phenomenal research, we journey with Cleopatra through her triumphs, tragedies, loves, and betrayals。 We see her not only as a queen, a goddess incarnate, but as a mortal woman, with faults and feelings, fantasies and failures。 Romantic and reflective, we can ponder the accomplishments and ambitions of Cleopatra in a new light; this novel helps show us a side of her that is more than pure legend。 Perfect for readers of in depth history。 。。。more

I'm sure I have nothing new to add that hasn't already been said before, but this book is a masterpiece。 Cleopatra truly comes to life; not only that, but it's as if she is really speaking to us through the ages。 Her insights are startlingly relatable today, and Margaret George brilliantly relays Cleopatra's thoughts, emotions and actions。 It's so hard to separate this from the real Cleopatra。 I could easily believe these are her long lost memoirs。Parts of it were heart-wrenching and the ending I'm sure I have nothing new to add that hasn't already been said before, but this book is a masterpiece。 Cleopatra truly comes to life; not only that, but it's as if she is really speaking to us through the ages。 Her insights are startlingly relatable today, and Margaret George brilliantly relays Cleopatra's thoughts, emotions and actions。 It's so hard to separate this from the real Cleopatra。 I could easily believe these are her long lost memoirs。Parts of it were heart-wrenching and the ending left me absolutely gutted, even though I knew it was coming from the beginning。 This book was daunting because of its sheer size but I am happy I stuck with it。 It is one of the most transportive books I've read。Sure, there were just a couple spots I skimmed (mainly describing the animal fights in Rome), but this book felt complete。 I wouldn't have left anything out, and I don't think there's anything to add。 It felt perfect。 I have a feeling this book will stay with me for a long time。 。。。more

"The Memoirs of Cleopatra" is yet another example of Margaret George's incredible skill capturing and illuminating time and place。 Without dwelling on superficial trappings, a common historical fiction trap for many novelists, she expertly breathes a surrounding life into her novels。 She takes the reader there in a way that perfectly balances suggestion and the reader's imagination。 For this reason, I thorougly enjoy her books and complete them with a feeling of having truly visited another time "The Memoirs of Cleopatra" is yet another example of Margaret George's incredible skill capturing and illuminating time and place。 Without dwelling on superficial trappings, a common historical fiction trap for many novelists, she expertly breathes a surrounding life into her novels。 She takes the reader there in a way that perfectly balances suggestion and the reader's imagination。 For this reason, I thorougly enjoy her books and complete them with a feeling of having truly visited another time。 Having previously read "Cleopatra: The Queen Who Challenged Rome and Conquered Eternity" by Alberto Angela (nonfiction and a great read), this novel was a welcome window into what could have been her life。 And it was a welcome addition that sought to address some of her infamy with the understanding that the written record historians have relied on came from those who benefited most from her slander。 There is no denying that this book is long。 It is, at some points, almost excessively long。 But。 Once completed, readers will realize why the length is necessary。 Without the length, and even some of the slower paced chapters, we wouldn't close the novel with such a deep connection to Cleopatra's humanity。 Throughout the novel, we meet Cleopatra at different life stages。 The tiny child who faced a deep loss, the precocious young girl finding adventure, the adolescent with the world on her shoulders, the young and creative queen, the love of Caesar, the Mother, and the love of Marc Antony。 Each of these snapshots offers a different side to her character - ones that shift and change as she matures。 Quite realistically, she also reads as quite arrogant and selfish in spots, and we get a glimpse of the life events that help her grow into and away from those proclivities。"The Memoirs of Cleopatra" is an engaging, exhaustive, moving, and entertaining read。 I would definitely recommend it。 。。。more

This was a book so nice that I had to read it twice- and at 957 pages, that’s saying something! Cicero, Brutus, Octavian (later aka Caesar Augustus), Calpurnia, King Herod, Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and many others appear in this incredible book of historical fiction。 The star of the show is of course, Cleopatra。 She is presented as an incredibly complex and intelligent human being。 Her life story is so interesting that each chapter could probably have been its own book。 There are many adventures and events: The Battle of Actium, Caesars assassination, Cleopatra’s meeting with Marc Antony at Tarsus。。。those events and many more are featured。 There are also quite a few scenes of Cleopatra among her inner circle, which was always fun and interesting to read about。 The characters of Olympos, Iras, and Charmian were apparently real people, which made the story come even more alive for me。 Cleopatra was, especially for ancient times, an incredibly independent, educated, and well-traveled woman-even for a monarch。 She apparently spoke seven languages, which comes in handy when you are traveling the ancient world。 Some of my favorite parts of the book were Cleopatra’s numerous trips up the Nile River。 Julius Caesar accompanied Cleopatra on one of those many journeys, which was fascinating。 Ms。 George did an excellent job making the imagery practically leap off the page。 The only (slightly) annoying thing about historical novels that are told in the first person (and I have read quite a few) is that I occasionally find myself thinking sarcastically “Wow, (insert character name here) has the most AMAZING MEMORY EVER!” However, this is such a minor annoyance that it’s almost not worth mentioning。 If that sort of thing annoys you, I advise you to ramp up the suspension of disbelief a bit。 That should be enough to keep you enthralled in this vivid, evocative, mesmerizing book。 If you are a fan of historical fiction, Cleopatra, Ancient History, or just an incredibly entertaining (and somewhat educational!) read- get this book, read, and if you are like me, repeat! An amazing book full of adventure and intrigue, and so much more。 An excellent companion piece to this fantastic novel is the nonfiction Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff, which I’ll review next。 。。。more

I have some more pages to read。 If the book was shorter I would rate 5。 I feel I know these people they become real。 If you google wiki while reading the book the author sticks to history pretty much。 I hate reading a book that is “historical fiction” because the author used the name of a real person and that’s pretty much all they stick to。 This book has been dropped over and over cause it put me to sleep and it’s huge。 I recommend if you have a lot of free time!
